From the photographer: "Star trails are a great way to emphasize the movement of stars during the course of the night, as well as to put foreground objects into perspective. They are easy to produce, and simply involve combining a series of long exposure photographs into a single image. This image shows the iconic Split Rock Lighthouse of the North Shore of Lake Superior in early spring, and was made facing east, so the stars appear to arch upwards into the sky at an angle approximately equal to the latitude (47 degrees north). The fluidity of the beautiful star trails stands in stark contrast to the rugged strength of the guarding lighthouse."
